Today I got those two tanks running with the Gould pump. I left the
old pump doing the same work it was doing, and after I added maybe 20
gallons of water to the system, it runs in good balance. I adjusted
the sump level maintenance (topoff and pump shutoff) for the new
equilibrium. I had previously solved an old plumbing mistake that was
causing me extra drainage when the pump was down (I had installed a check
valve on the pump side, but there were two downstream outlets that were not
protected against siphoning, so the one was siphoning into the other and
then going back down to the sump...). Things are running smoothly now
(a few annoying leaks but in the end not enough to lose sleep over).

I tried (and failed) to get the two upstairs tanks now planned (a 20 G Extra
Tall "nano" for my son, and my 30 G Extra Tall seahorse tank) plumbed in so
I could run them for a gathering of friends and family. I got a lot
done, but in the end I couldn't get the fundamental parts done in time.

Theonon II looks much fatter already. I think he will be fine after
all. The "fish man" at the LFS told me he'd been eating well, and I
figured he was exaggerating since the likelihood a Dragonet will eat
anything prepared is almost zero (but not quite). He was clearly very
hungry but he still had plenty of strength left and his body looks to be
plump enough.

I spent birthday money today on a new Mandarin Dragonet my son immediately
dubbed Theonon after the deceased Dragonet who was our first marine
vertebrate. He looked a bit gaunt after I got him home, and I began to
worry about him. He seems a little tired but otherwise there are no
signs of trouble. I will watch him. |
